Early Adopter Physicians to Benefit Most from Stimulus Bill Healthcare IT Incentives, Expert Says

With the passage of this week’s $787 billion stimulus bill, over $19 billion in incentives became available for healthcare IT implementation. According to Chittaranjan “CM” Mallipeddi, CEO and founder of MedPlexus, a leading provider of SaaS (software-as-a-service) solutions to medical practices, independent practitioners may stand to gain the most.

“For doctors running their own practice, the stimulus package includes sizable incentives that can make a very positive impact on their office’s bottom line,” says Mallipeddi. “That said, independent physicians are often hesitant to invest in EHR because they assume that the initial investment is too costly or they feel they don’t have the time needed to evaluate the various options.”

Mallipeddi notes that earlier, smaller incentives have spurred increased adoption of EHR over the last few years and that early adopters will be well-positioned to receive the first payouts, which are scheduled for 2011 and expected to total as much as $65,000 per physician.

“The good news is that doctors can start to take steps now to implement technologies that will easily allow them to demonstrate effective use. This will also improve healthcare quality, as well as safety and efficiency, and ensure eligibility for the incentives when available. Even better, they’ll begin to realize cost-efficiencies almost immediately upon implementation,” he says.
